PRESENTATION TO PLANNING COMMISSION ON NEGLECTED TROPICAL DISEASE AND TB FOR THE 12TH PLAN.
TRIOs in partnership with LEPRA India, made a presentation to Dr. (Ms) Sayeeda Hameed, Member Planning Commission on 30th January 2012. The purpose of the presentation is to ensure that these issues are given due importance in the ensuing 12th plan.
The presentation looked mainly at 4 issues – Leprosy, Lymphatic Filariasis, Kala Azar and TB. All these diseases have been prevalent in India for many years and there are specific national programs to address these. These programs have been relatively successful in bringing down the prevalence of these diseases. However, recent data shows that there has been resurgence in the number of cases reported in each of these diseases, especially leprosy; and the appearance of multi, extensively and totally drug resistance in case of TB. This is an issue of extreme concern and one of the key reasons behind approaching the Planning Commission, to highlight the increasing burden of these diseases and to focus on these in the 12th plan document.
Approaches to addressing each of these issues were also proposed in the meeting. The suggestions made were well within the ambit of the existing programs with minimal addition of newer activities, so that the changes could be easily adopted.
This initiative by TRIOs and LEPRA was to advocate for a change in approach and to enable eradication of these diseases, not just their elimination as defined by WHO; with a defined timeline and specific approach.
